Ardrossan - A perfect Couples Get Away in the Mudgee vineyards - one couple or up to four couples

Mudgee Getaways Ardrossan Bed and Breakfast Mudgee is the perfect getaway destination for four couples, friends or family, who want to escape the grind, noise and mad dash of the city for the peace and serenity of the countryside. Mudgee is a very picturesque 3 1/2-hour drive over the Blue Mountains. As you approach Mudgee you will feel you have arrived in a very special place.

The Cudgegong valley is surrounded by purple/blue mountains, more hectares under grape cultivation than the Hunter Valley and much more laid back.

There is a lot to see and do so plan to spend at least two or three days here having fun with your friends.

First let us get you settled in at Ardrossan.
Take the Tourist drive/Gulgong road north west out of Mudgee.
Pass Radio 2MG on your right, where Susan started her broadcast career in 1961. Pass Wilbetree Rd on your right and the 2 ND driveway on your right is Ardrossan Bed and Breakfast. Come down the long tree-lined driveway and park over to your right. Honk your horn and the welcoming committee, three darling little girl dogs will come out to greet you, tails wagging. Susan will be there too, but the dogs get more attention. Walk up the verandah with us and welcome to Ardrossan b and b.

This huge sunroom is our part, very dog friendly. Blankets draped over leather lounges for maximum canine comfort. Here you will see the best view of Lake Esme, named after Susan's late mum. The geese, Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti and Do are swimming on the water with lots of black muscovy and indian runner ducks, woodies, cormorants, blue herons and the occasional pelican. All of them expectantly waiting feeding. You'll see the red rumped parrots, firetail and double barred finches, Willy wagtails, blue wrens and crested pigeons devouring seed at the bird feeders. Go out later to see the white homing pigeons. Beautiful colourful tapestries, cushions and patchwork bedspreads line the white bagged brick walls in our dining room, all done by Esme Bray, Susan's mum. Ed's dad made the table and chairs. Collections of Clarice Cliff china, copper kettles, antiques, warming pans and colourful Finnish pots add to the charm of the big country kitchen with its high wooden ceiling. A Rayburn stove has pride of place backed up by an electric stove.

Come and settle in to your rooms in your completely separate bed and breakfast.

The Rose RoomHere is The Rose Room. A beautiful new Memory Foam queen bed with a NASA designed overlay that makes for a blissful night's rest. The antique furniture comes from Ed's family and his dad is the artist. Your double doors open out on to the entertainment verandah, the swimming pool and the lovely rural scene of cattle grazing in the paddocks or chasing one another up to the dam for a drink. Just lower the blind on the eastern side if you don't want to be woken by the sun. The Rose Room has its own private ensuite.

The Safari roomOur largest room looking out on to the park, with a separate entrance, new Memory Foam overlay queen bed, and an extra wide single bed and a comfortable armchair with ottoman. Three adults can sleep in comfort. More of Ed's dad's art work on the walls. He was a man of many talents. He made looms and spinning wheels, lassoes and lace and even worked on the atomic bomb in Oak Ridge Tennessee.

The Paris Room has its own ensuite bathroom. Remember to take short showers, as Ardrossan is dependent on rainwater. You can drink it, just don't waste it. See the buckets to save the shower water for the garden? Plants like rain water much better than the bore water. Just tip the buckets on the garden out your door. See, you are doing your bit to help conserve Australia's water. I hope you are doing this back home!

Just down the hallway is the library. Here you will find a round table and chairs and hundreds of books and games.

The door to your right is the laundry/kitchenette with a fridge to cool your milk, beer and wine, a jug for tea and coffee. Open the cupboard and you will find the cups, tea and coffee, sugar etc. The milk is in the fridge. How about a welcoming cuppa? Open the biscuit barrel and help yourself. There is a big bowl of fruit to tempt you too. Notice the two terrific pieces of handmade stained glass. The kitchenette is equipped with sink, microwave, cutlery, crockery and wine glasses. We have made the laundry a combined kitchen/laundry so guests can prepare small meals. More self contained if we have one couple or two couples who know one another. Help yourself if you need to iron something to wear for a night on the town with your friends as an ironing board is provided. Here is the sink where you can wash cups and glasses.

Walk out on to the verandah and relax into one of the extra comfortable chairs for a read. Maybe a soak in the heated spa or a swim later if the weather is warm enough. The pool is solar heated and open from October to May. The grapevine covered verandah is usually warm enough for sitting out most of the year.

Come into the guest dining room. Would you mind terribly removing your shoes on this white carpet? I know, what were we thinking? The house was unfinished double brick when we bought it and very dark, so trying to lighten it, we added this carpet which is rather hard to keep clean with all the wildlife outside. This dining table belonged to Susan's mum and dad. The buffet on the left was made by Ed's dad in 1935, as well as our dining room table and the four poster new Memory foam queen bed in the Tapestry room. See the wrought iron surrounding the paintings of Australian native birds? And the wrought iron mirror and firescreen featuring Adam and Eve? All done by Susan's dad who with her mum and Susan moved to Mudgee as the veterinary inspector in 1961. Lots of antiques here in your guest sitting room. The bears are part of Susan's Vermont Teddy Bear collection. Only mother bear could get away with wearing that mink complete with head and claws! Her babies are snug in a 1776 cradle that still has the old milk paint on it. The fireplace features a jetmaster woodburning insert. Here you can relax with a glass of wine and watch the TV or one of our dvds, videos or listen to some CDs. We hope you will enjoy them as we do. We have added the reverse cycle airconditioners to every room as the cleanest and most convenient way to heat and cool the b&b. Please turn off the lights and the airconditioner when you go to bed.

More Vermont teddy bears at the front door of the bed and breakfast sitting on the Spanish lounge. Open the front door and you will find the path to the parking area and the parklike garden where the ibis and kangaroos often roam.

Lets show you the rest of the bed and breakfast.

The Tapestry Room has its own large private bathroom with a spa bath, shower and separate toilet. Brand new mattress, boxspring and memory foam overlay queen bed.

The Tapestry RoomThis room is very special as Ed's dad made the four poster memory foam queen bed from one well seasoned walnut tree back in 1935 for his bride. The windows overlook the trees, bushes and greenery of the park. There is a desk and two chairs . Susan's mum did the tapestries. She was so talented. This is our daughter Chavaleh's room when she visits from Sydney.

philadelphiaroomNamed after the two tapestries of Independence Square and Elfreth's Alley the oldest street in Philadelphia USA on the walls. Susan, Ed, Chavaleh and Jason moved to Philadelphia from Des Moines Iowa in 1981 when Susan was hired by CBS radio. Here is a beautiful Esme Bray bell pull on the wall, other pieces of needlework, an antique chest and mirror, a desk and a comfortable armchair. The new Memory Foam queen bed is super comfortable with another of
the NASA overlays. We find that people in this room sleep in the longest. The view from the window is of the park. The Philadelphia Room has it's own ensuite bathroom with it's own private entrance.

So there you have Ardrossan B&B. Only four bedrooms so very intimate. You will find maps and brochures galore in the drawer in your rooms. Just knock on our door if you need us. Otherwise we will leave you in peace. The perfect accommodation for 4 couples who want to relax and be pampered in the country surrounded by beautiful gardens and views.

Your 5-course breakfast will be served at the time of your choosing in the dining room.

You can make your own toast. Toaster on the buffet in the dining room. Jams, honey, vegemite, mustard on the table.

If you want to sleep late we'll leave a continental breakfast available so you can help yourself. The tea and coffee will be hot in the dining room. Susan and Ed will be happy to reserve a wine tour for you and make recommendations on wineries and restaurants which are just a few minutes drive away. Not a bad idea to book restaurants on the weekend as it can get busy. We would be happy to tell you our favourite wines and wineries, galleries, shops and potters to visit. The Visitor's Bureau , turn left out of Ardrossan's driveway, 2 k on your left will have all sorts of brochures and advice on what to do and see. They have an interesting shop, which sells locally made products too. Often there will be special events like concerts, plays, country races and markets. These are all advertised on the www.mudgee.org site. There is a link on Ardrossan's web site.
